A Compendium of Neuropsychological Tests: Administration, Norms, and Commentary
The process of neuropsychological assessment depends to a large extent on the reliability and validity of neuropsycholog- ical tests. Unfortunately, not all neuropsychological tests are created equal, and, like any other product, published tests vary in terms of their “quality,” as defined in psychometric terms such as reliability, measurement error, temporal stabil- ity, sensitivity, specificity, predictive validity, and with respect to the care with which test items are derived and normative data are obtained. In addition to commercial measures, nu- merous tests developed primarily for research purposes have found their way into wide clinical usage; these vary consider- ably with regard to psychometric properties. With few excep- tions, when tests originate from clinical research contexts, there is often validity data but little else, which makes esti- mating measurement precision and stability of test scores a challenge.
