BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline A Foundation Manual Surgical Principles
Stephen Baines, Vicky Lipscomb and Tim Hutchinson
The aim of this new BSAVA Foundation Manual is to bring together all the basic principles of veterinary surgery that are usually relegated to the introductory chapter or paragraph of other surgical textbooks. Meticulous attention to the basic principles of surgery is critical if we are to achieve a good surgical outcome. Good surgeons are not those who are simply skilled at surgery, but those who ensure that every aspect of the care of their patient is performed to the highest standard, from the initial physical examination, preoperative investigation and stabilization, right through to the anaesthesia, analgesia and postoperative care. Complications that arise following surgery are often attributable to a lack of understanding or appreciation of the importance of these basic principles. These complications may be avoided by adhering to a set of basic principles, and this should be our aim.
