In recent years, the increasing quantity and variety of data available for decision support present a wealth of opportunity as well as a number of new challenges, in both the public and private sectors. Vast quantities of data are available through increasingly affordable and accessible data acquisition and communication technologies, including sensors, cameras, mobile location services, etc. When these are combined with emerging computing and analytical methodologies, they can lead to more thorough scientific understandings, informed decisions, and proactive management solutions. As a result, big data concepts and methodologies are steadily moving into the mainstream in a variety of science and engineering fields.
