In the first half of this century there were three or four classics which covered the design of all types of conventional machines. Since the early fifties there have been no new texts dealing with the design of mainstream d.c. and induction motors. The need for a new book on machine design arises because of recent advances in applications and design techniques and the emergence of new materials; a 3.7 kW motor now weighs a lot less than one designed in the fifties.
