The Anatomy of Prose

this is intended as a companion volume to The Anatomy of Poetry. I was driven to write The Anatomy of Poetry by the impossibility of finding an elementary book on poetry which should be what I wanted my students to read, or would wish people to read at school. In trying to write a similar volume on prose I soon realized that even if I ignored my personal prejudices I could prescribe no simple
book on the study of prose. I could find nothing. Perhaps I have merely been unobservant; but if such books are infrequent enough to elude my enquiries for some thirteen years a new one seems unlikely to be superfluous.
