TOLSTOY confessions

THE FALL of 1879 the fifty-one-year-old author of War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877) came to believe that he had accomplished nothing in life and that his life was meaningless. Either of these works would have assured him a permanent place in the annals of world literature; both testified to the depth of his genius and creativity. If artistic achievement of this magnitude cannot instill life with meaning, then where is meaning to be found? Such is the “question of life” that Tolstoy addresses in his Confession, a question as timeless as the spirit.
